Holy Crepe! My First Recipe

Yes, I 100% am going to make each of my post titles a pun on whatever recipe I’m making this week. Stay punny, my friends.

Hello beautiful people and welcome back to Cooking Through Hyrule! This is the first week of actual cooking, and I was really excited to pick the first recipe from Breath of the Wild that I wanted to make. It turned out to be way more difficult than I thought because I am SO indecisive and I switched my mind about 8 million times.

me trying to pick my recipe

I’ve been trying to eat less meat, and I don’t realize just how many meat recipes are in this game!!!! I might have to break my meat hiatus for this blog…I mean, how can I pass up cooking a STEAK? Clearly I have no self control.

I actually originally picked a different recipe to make for this week, but it turns out it’s super difficult to find risotto and goat butter at my local grocery store. It’s more likely that I just got too impatient and left without properly looking, so maybe that recipe will make a comeback when I can actually look through my supermarket without angrily storming out. Stay tuned.

Sooooo, after my grocery store temper tantrum, I picked a new recipe and decided to make a Honey Crepe!

energizing honey crepe

This is a dessert recipe found in Breath of the Wild that was actually pretty easy to replicate in real life. I wanted to start with something that I knew I could do relatively well, since it was my first BoTW recipe!

To make the Honey Crepe, I used (almost) exactly what the game said to: Fresh Milk, Cane Sugar, Courser Bee Honey, Tabantha Wheat, and a Bird Egg. I had to do a LITTLE real life tweaking (have you ever heard of a Courser Bee? Exactly, me neither. They don’t exist). So, I used cow milk, granulated and powdered sugar, regular honey, flour, and a chicken egg. The batter was a little lumpy, so it probably would have helped to add a little melted butter to break it up more. It looked pretty decent and only a little lumpy in the pan:

My lumpy batter…

I let it cook on one side for probably about 1 minute. There is no set time, because it all depends on how thick your crepe is. You’ll know its time to flip it when the edges start curling up slightly.

Clearly my flipping skills are mediocre.

This was actually the exact color I was going for, so I was pretty proud of myself. It’s really easy to burn things like this, so you have to make sure your stove isn’t too hot and you are monitoring the crepe closely. Don’t overthink it though. Just flip ittttt when you feel it’s time.

Once both sides are done, remove the crepe from the heat and let it sit and cool down for a minute. Then it’s time to add your toppings! To try to make it as close to the in-game recipe as possible, I folded the crepe over then sprinkled some powdered sugar and drizzled honey over it. That’s it! Crepe is done! Below my picture is what it looks like in the game. I did my best. But honey does NOT drizzle as easily as it appears in the game picture. It just kind of globbed everywhere. Whatever.

Doesn’t look too shabby if I do say so myself.

In-game version of the Honey Crepe

And there we have it! My first Breath of the Wild recipe re-creation was a success! It tasted pretty dang good, too. It came out thicker than I thought it would, which made it a great filling dessert.

The verdict? I’d make it again! I’d love to try it with some fresh fruits, or even make it a dinner crepe stuffed with something like spinach and chicken. Yummmm. Now I’m getting way too ahead of myself. It was a lot of fun trying to recreate this, and next week I’ll try something a little more complicated that really makes me get creative. Already looking forward to next week’s recipe!

Familiar with Breath of the Wild? Comment below what recipe you think I should make next!

The in-game recipe and actual real-life human recipe can both be found below.

  1. Wow the crepe you made looks great! I really like how you included all stages of the cooking and showed us pictures at different points throughout the process. It really made the recipe easy to follow and replicate-able. I think in regards to the recipe you do next, it should be seafood paella because i believe that would be a really good one to see you pull off!

I agree with Austinhotshot, your posts about the different stages of the process made it really easy to follow, one thing I would want to know is; did you mix the ingredients and stir them? But very good first post and I’m planning to try to replicate your recipe.

I really enjoyed reading this blog! I think your blog theme is such a good topic too because your including a digital (video game) component and replicating them in real life-super neat! I would of never thought of this idea, which is why I love it. I am not a big gamer but I’ve always like Legends of Zelda and Super Mario games so your blog definitely draws in my intention. My only concern would be for individuals who may not have much of an interest in gaming. Maybe a way to fix and draw in a bigger audience would be to explain why you started to play Zelda and other games in addition to making the recipes. But overall, great topic! Keep it up 🙂

I was just about to say I wish there was a recipe attached so that I could indulge myself, and its right there at the Bottom! The crepe looks fantastic and I appreciated the pun. I also enjoyed the fact that you are keeping the ingredients as close to the games ingredients as possible, besides the fact of fake items. I would only ask for a picture of the ingredients you used in case I want to recreate the same crepe, otherwise awesome post and I look forward to the next meal!

  6. I’ve heard of this game and i have to say I did not realize they had activities like this in the game. All the different ingredients and cooking styles it actually made me look up some gameplay of this. I think what you did is extremely interesting and I am excited to see what else you make from the game!

First off, I just wanna say that I loooove your theme/display, I think its super cool and the cover picture of the crepe is super inviting! I also loved reading your blog, I am always looking for new things to try and I do love crepes but I have never thought about incorporating honey. I really like how easy your directions are to follow and this is a recipe that I will definitely try myself. I am not a huge video gamer, but I really appreciate how you allowed your own interests to reflect in a blog that everybody can enjoy. Awesome job!

It’s very smart how you designed the blog: we are forced to look at your final result while reading the entire time. I also loved your sense of humor and laughed out loud when you discussed your flipping skills.
I am wondering if there’s a way to not loose the narrative when you get into the details of the recipe, but perhaps that is just nitpicking a bit.
I had a great time reading this post, and was impressed with your crepe skills, especially if you haven’t had a lot of experience making them.
    Great Job!

PS: I can give you some pointers regarding risotto ingredients if you’d like!
