Mission Statement

Hello lovely blog readers and welcome to Cooking Through Hyrule!

First and foremost, for those of you who have NO clue what ‘Hyrule’ even means, I will provide a quick SparkNotes summary of what I’m even talking about. Hyrule is the mystical land found in The Legend of Zelda video games, in which the main character Link (think short, blonde, pointy-eared elf boy) travels through and explores on his many quests and adventures. Boom. Now you know what my blog title actually means (well, one part of it). I’ll get to the ‘Cooking’ part in a second.  breath of the wild poster

The Legend of Zelda games have been around for quite a while, and the latest game installment in the world of Hyrule is a game called Breath of the Wild, which I play on my Nintendo Switch. Long story short, the aim of the game is to rescue Hyrule from an evil monster named Ganon, who is threatening to take over the land and kill everyone. Sounds lovely, I know. On your journey to defeat Ganon, Link can explore every inch of the great land of Hyrule, and hunt and forage as he goes along. This can be everything from collecting acorns from trees, picking peppers off wild plants, finding mushrooms growing by stumps, or even stealthily hunting down a bird or deer. All these items can be collected and stored in your handy dandy item screen. Using these items, Link can cook many different recipes to help him along his journey! They are mainly used to replenish his health if he is wounded in battle. He can cook items such as Fish Skewers, Roasted Prime Meat, Fried Egg and Rice, and countless others. That’s where the ‘Cooking’ part of my blog title comes in – I’m on a mission to make these recipes in my own kitchen!

I thought it would be a lot of fun to try to recreate some of the dishes and recipes that Link can make in the game. This is going to be an interesting and hopefully very fun challenge, as I’ll have to use my (I think decent) cooking skills to successfully create these recipes, and also come up with real-world equivalents for some game items that you definitely cannot find in real life. I’ve definitely never seen Voltfruits or Courser Bee Honey in my local grocery store.

Each week, I’ll pick a different recipe that I want to try, and showcase the ingredients and steps I need to take to make it!  I’m going to do my best to use as few extra ingredients as possible to keep it as authentic as I can. Over the course of my posts, I hope to further introduce everyone to the exciting world of Hyrule and the Legend of Zelda games as I find so much joy in them and I hope you all will too. And for those of you that like to cook, maybe we’ll discover some delicious new recipes together! I am not a serious gamer and I’m also not a gourmet chef; I am just combining two things that I love very much and have a lot of fun with. Thanks for reading and I hope you’ll stick with me as I try to cook through Hyrule!

I’m looking forward to seeing how this blog will develop and how you plan on setting the scene each week, keeping each post fresh and entertaining, beyond the recipe.
Obviously, pictures and ingredient descriptions will be vital, but a comedic tone (which you showcase here) will also be something to always bring to the table (see what I did there? lol).
    Good luck and bon appétit!
