Keep Your Eyes on the Pies

We’re back! Hi everyone, hope you enjoyed your weekend and are ready to kill it this week!! I believe in you!!

I feel like I haven’t tackled any really unique or particularly difficult yet, so I wanted to try to make something different. I decided to try to make Meat Pies! (I know, it doesn’t sound even remotely appetizing. Bear with me.)

One thing that always makes me laugh is that in Breath of the Wild, any recipe you make is cooked in a cooking pot over a fire regardless of the recipe. You just throw the ingredients in and *poof* you magically have whatever meal you’re making. I wish it was like that in real life tbh.

LET’S GET COOKING!! The in-game recipe calls for any type of meat, butter, salt, and Tabantha wheat. I decided to use chicken for my filling, and I opted to add some veggies in too. For the wheat, I just used regular flour.

So the first thing I needed for this recipe was the dough. Usually you need yeast to make a good dough, but using yeast requires you to let the dough rise for over an hour, and I was too impatient for that. So I literally Googled “best dough recipe without yeast”, and lo and behold, I found one with really high ratings. Hooray for laziness and being impatient!! I don’t want to take credit for this amazing dough recipe, so you can find it here. It only uses 5 ingredients, and it was so quick and easy to make!! I’ll definitely be using it again for future recipes when I’m feeling lazy.

The dough after it had been kneaded and cut

After the dough had been made, it was time to cook the chicken. I used two chicken tenderloins, and threw them in the pan with some oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. The tenderloins are pretty thin so they cooked up really fast.

PRO TIP (this applies to any recipe): Let your meat rest after you cook it!!!!!! If you cut into the meat too early, all the juices will run out. The juices help retain flavor and moisture, preventing the meat from drying out. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

I love tenderloins because they cook so fast!!

I opted to add some spinach into these meat pies as well, because I figured I needed SOME healthiness. I just threw some frozen spinach into the pan with some oil, salt, pepper, and garlic powder to heat it up. This is the part of the story where of COURSE something goes wrong, because why can’t I just have a normal recipe, am I right??

So my spinach is just chilling in the pan trying to heat up, and I go to shake some salt on it. As soon as I turn the salt shaker over, the top comes off and the ENTIRE bottle of salt pours DIRECTLY on my spinach. I really can’t make this stuff up. I even took pictures as proof. I honestly just stood there and laughed because this is SO something that would happen to me.

Please make fun of me. I deserve it.

I walked into the other room to show my little sister what I did, and I thought she was going to pee herself from laughing so hard. This is so typical of me. Why do bad things happen to good people?????

ANYWAY, I cleaned up my stupid salt fiasco and cooked up some more spinach, this time without incident. I made sure that salt lid was on SO tight that no one will probably ever be able to open it again. Oops. After the spinach was done, I shredded up the chicken and put it back into the pan with the spinach. I personally just used my fingers to shred up the chicken, but some people prefer to use forks. I guess I just prefer to act like a caveman, idk. My mom would probably be mad at me.

This is the spinach and chicken mixture on one half of the dough.

I took the chicken and spinach mixture and put it in the center of one half of the dough. After I made sure it was even, I put the other half of the dough on top and pinched the edges together to make one big dough pie cake looking thing. I’m dumb and forgot to take a picture, so just imagine a small circular cake. Except with no icing or sprinkles or anything actually exciting. After I made sure the edged were completely sealed, I covered both sides in melted butter. Now it’s time to cook! I heated up some oil, then placed my pie in the pan. I waited until one side was golden brown and crispy, and then I flipped it over. Each side cooed very nicely, but it was tricky to get the edges to cook. I ended up putting a lid over the pan so try to retain heat inside the pan, which actually worked and cooked the edges. Now it was done!

Final product just out of the pan!

Before I cut into the Meat Pie, it kind of just looked like a giant fat pancake. The top and bottom got soooo nice and crispy, and it actually smelled really good. I was pleasantly surprised when I cut it open!!

It actually worked!

I was worried that the filling wouldn’t stay in while I was cooking, but the edges stayed perfectly sealed. The final product actually came out pretty great!! I’ll admit that the picture doesn’t necessarily look super appetizing, but it tasted wayyy better than it looked. The dough was the perfect consistently, and it went together so nicely with the chicken and the spinach.

Final thoughts? This was really good and turned out to be one of my favorite recipes to make so far! It’s something a little different, but also doesn’t take long to make at all. If I made it again, I would probably try to use less dough. There were some sections that didn’t completely cook through all the way and were still a little mushy, so this could be avoided if it weren’t so thick. (it was still perfectly safe to eat though, as the dough contains no raw ingredients). I’d also love to add some cheese, I think that would go soooo well with this. But let’s be honest, cheese makes everything better.

I know this was one of my longer posts, so thanks for bearing with me guys!! Even if you don’t end up making this specific recipe, I highly recommend using that dough recipe that I have linked earlier in the post. It’s super helpful if you’re looking to make a quick pizza dough or something like that.

I know a lot of you have been asking for dessert recipes, so that is currently on the agenda for next week!! I won’t give it away, but let’s just say that I’m sure most of you will find it apple-ing *wink wink* (get it?? appealing?? anyone??? okay I’ll stop.)

Thank you guys for reading, and I’ll see you all next week!!

oh no, I laughed when I read you spilled all the salt into the pan with the spinach and then you added pictures! Haha loved that you incorporate these ‘fails’ because it makes the post feel more personal and we get to see the struggle which overall makes the blog more FUN!! This recipe looks actually really good. I love bread, chicken, spinach and yes cheese! That would of be a great thing to incorporate! Also I find your humor to be very strong in all your posts. You gave a great way of connecting your audience and always making us want to read! I would of liked the see the Zelda version (picture) of this recipe a little larger just to see a comparison but thats just a small suggestion!
Cant wait to see the dessert post next week!

I laughed consistently throughout this post. You have nailed a style in which you elicit a response from your reader, and that is so hard to do. You never want to write something that nobody cares about, and humor and laughter are a sure way to make sure people enjoy and remember what you wrote.
PS: next time, only fill half and fold it over into a triangle, so you use less dough and have two meat pies/americanized empanadas!

Cheese makes everything better, the most true statement I’ve ever heard! I continue to love your humor and how it shows throughout your posts. You never fail to make me laugh! I’m glad you were able to get past some minor cooking fails, we all wish it was as easy as throwing it into a pot :/. This dish looks so good! I seriously want to make it myself! I like your pictures showing your cooking process, it made it much easy to follow!

I’m really terrible at adding the proper amount of salt to food but apparently I’ve met my match! This recipe looks like a cheese less calzone and I love the chicken and spinach combo. Have you checked out Binging with Babish? He takes recipes from TV shows and has had to come up with some pretty creative substitutions for things. It reminded me of your fancy wheat. Great job! Terrible seasoning malfunction. So tragic but we bounce

This story is very similar to when I used to work at a pizzeria and my manager made me make a calzone. I really enjoyed the puns and the pictures in the blog, it’s an excellent post and also very funny the salt part had me cracking up. Can’t wait to see next week’s post!

I always look forward to reading your blog, of course because of the never disappointing recipes, but because of your humor! I think what differentiates your blog is your sense of personality in all your posts. I didn’t even realize by the end of your post that it was longer than normal because I was entertained the entire time. Awesome job!
